Big Power GTV 16V Turbo!

29 posts in this topic

Hi all.  Been lurking on here for about a year and now the build is finished I thought it's about time to introduce myself and my car!  I'll try add more details and pics when I get the chance, but for now here's a quick overview:

I'm KJ, owner of the Fiat/Lancia specialist tuning business Voodoo Tuning.  My previous car was a fiat Coupe 16V Turbo, built and tuned by me to 430 bhp / 400 lbft - the most powerful Coupe 16VT in the UK for a while.

Last year the Coupe finally succumbed to rust cancer.  I'd heard the engine would bolt in to the GTV, both cars being based on the Tipo floorpan. So I decided to re-shell the engine in a GTV.  Well the engine did bolt in - but that was about it!  Literally everything else had to be modified: fuel system, drivetrain, suspension, even the cooling fans.  Cue non-stop 6 month build; a good friend of mine working on the fabrication, and myself working on the wiring and engine.

I'll try add more details and pics when I get the chance, but for now here are a few:

BTW, can you think of a good designation for this car?  GTV16T? GTV 16VT?  ...?

VooMan you are crazy! :) You'll be at home here, welcome!

So, this is a 430hp GTV? We have a nice collection of insane mods here already, this one is among the best.

Hi and welcome to the forum :).

Look like that was what a project and now you have one of the most powerful GTVs in the world B).

Have you thought about some other option for the location of air filter. For example in GTV TB windshield washer "tank" is a bag in the boot :D and the air filter box is at the top of the fender.

GTV is heavier car than the Coupe in general, so maybe this car is a little slower than previous one.

Nice :) do you use Fiat gearbox? and driveshaft?

How is the drivabillity?

I'd been wondering where mine stands in the "big power" ranks! :D So far I've only found a few 300 bhp V6's and one Twin-engined V6 with a combined output of 600 bhp:o

Yeah, we did scratch our heads over where to mount the air filter.  It's current location seems to be fine though.  It didn't show any loss of bhp on the dyno, compared to it's previous location in the Coupe (on the fender).  The heat shield shown in the photo seems to be doing its job shielding the filter from the engine to one side, and the gearbox underneath.

So if the TB washer bag is in the boot, does that mean it has even less boot space then then all the other models?!

So the GTV is a bit heavier?  That might explain why I thought it felt a bit slower off-boost...

Cheers.  Yep, Coupe gearbox (with viscodrive) and driveshafts.  Working out the drivetrain was a nightmare.  Ended off using Coupe subframe, wishbones, shocks and springs, and (IIRC) Lancia Delta Integrale track rod ends.  And I can't remember exactly what hub flanges.  One of the several different V6 flanges, I think.

The car is my daily driver, so I tuned the engine for good road manners; smooth idle, strong midrange torque and good drivability off-boost.  Foot flat to the floor though, it is a torque-steering SOB!  Hard to keep in a straight line.  That problem might be solved with polybushes in the front wishbones though.  I'll have to see in the future.

Coupe Turbo gearboxes have a factory fitted Viscodrive unit, which is a viscous coupling between the driveshafts.  I thought about fitting a Quaife ATB years ago but, as far as I'm aware there isn't one available for this gearbox

Wow that's a beast of a engine!! I bet that will surprise a few people it's just looks like a standard gtv. Are you going to upgraded the brakes?

Where are you based

[Reg what driveshafts/gearbox etc he used] - Haha, sounds about as gnarly as I imagined it would be!

Very impressive project! More photos and details are always welcome!

Stock TS brakes? Might want to change those with 400+ hp...

What sort of 0-60 time do you this your Beauty will be doing?

TBH I don't plan to do any 0-60's because launching tears up the CV joints!  I'll try to do some 30-100's some time though.  It's a better test for a road car - plus it's kinder to the drivetrain!

Wow that sound very exciting! :-))

I would be happy when my V6 TB project will run and hit even the 300HP mark!  But well.. I expect something around 270horses because of the size of the turbo I choose: on the small side in favour of drivability.. So I regard my project more like a vast improvement than a radical upgrade. :-)

The (Dutch) GTV Bimotore is around 500hp (not 600hp) but still a lot of power. Some time ago I came across a German GTV 3.0 24V with turbo which made a claimed 627HP.

Quaife differential is not showed for Coupe, but can be fitted for Alfa V6 with some modifications - other axle half shaft, differential housing from other italian cars from same period from what I remember hear and read, but don't know with details. There is some Coupes with this mod.

I see that the car have high torque and look as a street car, so what clutch did you use?

I wasn't impressed with the clutches currently available from other companies; either overpriced, poor quality and/or horrible to drive on the road. So I developed my own clutch.  The friction material is Kevlar and can handle 542 Nm, yet still feels like OEM :)

This sound interesting. There is kevlar clutch/es for this model on the market already. How this compare to them? Can it handle such torque on 4WD?

This is the only one that is has been dyno tested to 542 Nm (400 lb-ft).  As far as I'm aware, none of the others are rated to anything close to this.  Clutch engagement is very light and smooth.  None of the judder you get from a paddle clutch.  Also, much lighter action than a Helix organic clutch.  Feels almost like standard.

Yes, it would handle the same torque on a AWD car.  Though if you like to do a lot of AWD drag starts, I can do a paddle version of this clutch :)

What engine was originally in the GTV? Was there any way you could use the GTV shocks?

Hi.  It was originally a 2.0 TS.  We couldn't use the TS shocks because the hub mounts don't fit the Coupe hub carriers.  Completely pointless difference when they could easily have used the same shocks and hubs for both cars, but hey that's Italian for you!  There are other ways of making suspension fit but this was ours - and it also was the least complicated; pretty much all-Coupe components.

I think you can also use the V6 shocks on the Coupe hubs (I guess they are the same as Fase1 12V and 155 V6 hubs).

Best is to use Fase2 24V version with the right springs so you can use bigger wheels.

Fase1 V6 12V shocks has longer springs and 15mm lower spring retainers on the shocks which makes a 225/40-18 a very tight fit. .

Finally got the chance to fit the brakes I bought last year!

GTV V6 305mm discs

custom brackets

Mintex standard pads

Renault Clio/Megane Sport calipers

Why Renault calipers? Because they are radially mounted, which meant my friend could make brackets to fit the hub mounts.

Took an absolute age to find calipers that were: a) commonly available,  b ) the right size for the discs, c) radial mounting. The only other technical difference between these and actual GTV calipers is that these have equal size pistons, whereas GTV ones have two larger pistons and two smaller. The combined piston area is identical though.

Looks good!

But there are also radial mounted Alfa Romeo discs with identical pistons as the Gtv 305mm ones (for 159). I am not sure about the disc diameter, could be 330..
